Snowflake + Anthropic: Enterprise Governed AI Is Here
Snowflake has partnered with Anthropic to bring Claude to Cortex AI. This integration addresses enterprise data sovereignty, security, and governance challenges.

Snowflake and Anthropic: Making Enterprise AI Actually Governed
Here is the problem Snowflake and Anthropic are solving: enterprises want to use Claude for analysis, summarization, and complex reasoning. But they cannot send proprietary data to a public API. Even with Anthropic's data exclusion policy, many organizations have compliance requirements that demand on-premise, private, audited AI.
Cortex AI: Claude Gets Embedded in Data Warehouses
Cortex AI is Snowflake's managed AI service. It already runs Snowflake's own models for text analysis and summarization. By adding Claude to Cortex, Snowflake customers can now use Claude directly from SQL queries and Snowflake notebooks, without leaving the data warehouse.
The implications: financial analysts can use Claude to summarize quarterly earnings reports stored in Snowflake. Marketing teams can run Claude sentiment analysis on customer feedback in real time. Engineering teams can have Claude generate documentation from code and database schema. All of this happens in-place, with full audit trails, zero data exfiltration.
Four Products, One Integration
The announcement introduced four distinct capabilities, each targeting a different enterprise pain point. Snowflake Intelligence is a personal agent powered by Claude that answers natural language questions against governed enterprise data, no SQL required. Snowflake Cortex Code, powered by Claude, has become Snowflake's fastest-growing product, with over 7,100 users building production data pipelines and applications directly from natural language prompts. Cortex Agents provides a framework for building multi-step, autonomous workflows on governed data, covering customer support, financial compliance review, and cybersecurity investigations. The fourth piece, the Cortex Code plugin for Claude Code, works in the other direction: it brings governed Snowflake data directly into Claude Code development sessions, so engineers can generate code that already knows your data schema and access policies.
The Claude Marketplace Play
Snowflake is a launch partner on the Claude Marketplace, which lets enterprise customers consolidate AI spend across Snowflake capabilities using their existing Anthropic commitments. Instead of managing separate budgets for Snowflake AI features and Anthropic API access, enterprises can apply a single Anthropic contract toward both. This simplifies the purchasing motion and reduces the friction that typically slows enterprise AI rollouts. For procurement teams evaluating AI spend, consolidated billing across a governed data platform and a frontier model provider is a meaningful structural advantage.
Why Enterprises Actually Want This
The AI market right now is two-tiered: (1) Web AI (ChatGPT, Claude.ai) for knowledge work, and (2) in-premise AI (LLaMA, Mistral) for compliance-heavy use cases. Neither is perfect. Web AI is smarter but risky. In-premise AI is safe but weaker.
Snowflake and Anthropic close that gap. Enterprises get Claude's reasoning power (top-tier), deployed in a governed environment (zero external data leakage), running on Snowflake's infrastructure (audit-ready, compliance-native).
This is exactly what procurement committees want to hear. It is why this partnership matters more than headlines suggest. In the next 18 months, expect to see this pattern replicate: Anthropic integrates Claude into enterprise infrastructure layers, including data warehouses, cloud services, and enterprise software.
Who Is Already Using It
The partnership is not theoretical. Enterprise customers including Basis, Block, Carvana, eSentire, Indeed, and Notion are running Claude through Cortex AI in production. Hundreds more Snowflake customers globally are in active deployment. Snowflake's total customer base exceeds 13,900 organizations, which sets the ceiling for how broadly this integration can scale. The use cases span cybersecurity threat investigations, financial analysis, marketing performance optimization, life sciences research, and sales intelligence: exactly the workloads enterprises have historically kept away from public AI APIs because the data was too sensitive to send externally. This expansion was announced at Snowflake Summit 26, the company's annual conference, building on the December 2025 foundation that included a $200 million commitment from Anthropic. The summit marked the transition from pilot integrations to full production deployment across Snowflake's customer base.
Competitive Angle: OpenAI Has Gaps Here
OpenAI has Azure integration (strong), but Azure is not a data warehouse. Microsoft is trying to build this with Fabric, but Fabric is less mature than Snowflake. Amazon is putting Claude on Bedrock, but that is still external to customer infrastructure.
Snowflake and Anthropic are executing the play that enterprise customers actually need: put best-in-class AI inside the data platform where enterprise data already lives.
What the Leaders Said
Steve Corfield, Vice President at Anthropic, described the fit directly: "Snowflake brings the governed data environment enterprises already rely on, and Claude brings the reasoning." Christian Kleinerman, Snowflake's SVP of Product, framed the customer demand: "Customers want AI that works directly on their governed data, not in isolated systems." Together, the quotes articulate the core proposition: enterprise-grade AI should not require moving your data to reach the model. The model comes to the data.
What to Watch
- Pricing: How much does Claude-in-Cortex cost vs. the public API? Will enterprises save money on API costs by using Cortex?
- Model freshness: Will Cortex ship with new Claude versions immediately, or lag behind?
- Adoption rate: How many of Snowflake's 13,900 customers opt in? Cortex Code already has 7,100 users, suggesting the floor is meaningful.
- Copycats: Watch for similar moves from Databricks (with Anthropic or OpenAI) and other data platforms.
The December 2025 foundation, a $200 million commitment, made this partnership real before the summit. What Snowflake Summit 26 signals is that the experimentation phase is over. These are production workloads now.
