Unauthorized Users Accessed Claude Mythos on Launch Day—And Anthropic's Missing the Real Story
An unauthorized contractor breach exposed Claude Mythos on launch day. We examine why Anthropic is missing the real story behind this access incident.

According to reports, the access did not involve a technical exploit of Anthropic's servers. Instead, it was facilitated by a worker at a third-party contractor hired to evaluate the model's safety. This individual shared their credentials with a private group of AI enthusiasts on Discord, who used URL guessing and leaked database parameters to access the model's staging environment.
The Role of Project Glasswing and Staging Environments
Claude Mythos is Anthropic's specialized cyber-focused model, kept under strict control due to its advanced capability in finding and exploiting code vulnerabilities. It was being distributed selectively under a program called Project Glasswing. However, to evaluate the model, Anthropic relied on external contractors, creating a staging environment that lacked multi-factor authentication (MFA) and IP whitelisting.
Key Elements of the Breach
- Staging Access: The model was accessed via a staging URL used by a safety evaluation contractor.
- Credential Sharing: A contractor worker shared login sessions with external users in a Discord group.
- Data Correlation: The group used details from an unrelated leak at Mercor, an AI training startup, to map Anthropic's internal naming patterns.
- No Core Compromise: Anthropic confirmed that production systems and user data were not affected.
The Real Story: Supply Chain Vulnerability
Anthropic's public statement focused on the fact that its core servers were secure. But this misses the real lesson. The security of a frontier AI lab is only as strong as its weakest vendor. As labs outsource RLHF, red-teaming, and model evaluation to third parties, they expand their attack surface. If a contractor can easily bypass access controls to query a model, the model's proprietary weights and safety guardrails are at risk.
Action Items for AI Operations Teams
For enterprises deploying AI, this incident is a warning. You must extend your vendor risk management to include AI evaluators and data annotators. Ensure all vendor environments enforce MFA, strict IP whitelisting, and session timeouts. More importantly, audit what model access is granted to external partners, and restrict access to the minimum necessary for their specific tasks.
