Claude Code's Billing Just Split on June 15 — Here's What CEOs and Finance Leaders Need to Know About the New Agent Credit Model
Anthropic is splitting Claude Code billing starting June 15. Agents move to a separate credit pool. For CEOs running AI automation, this changes your budget calculus.

Under the new model, your existing Pro or Max subscription remains unchanged for interactive use. When you chat with Claude on the web, use the desktop or mobile apps, or run Claude Code in interactive terminal sessions, your usage will draw from your standard subscription pool. However, a new 'Agent SDK Credit Pool' will govern programmatic and automated tasks.
What Is Covered by the Agent SDK Credit Pool?
The new Agent SDK pool covers any activity where Claude is executed programmatically or in a headless manner. This includes using the Claude Agent SDK (in Python or TypeScript), running the claude -p command, utilizing Claude Code within CI/CD pipelines like GitHub Actions, and connecting third-party applications that authenticate via your Claude subscription credentials.
Understanding the Monthly Credit Allowances
Anthropic is providing a fixed monthly credit allowance for programmatic usage based on your subscription tier. Crucially, these credits do not roll over from month to month. If you don't use them, you lose them.
- Pro: $20/month of dedicated agent credits.
- Max 5x: $100/month of dedicated agent credits.
- Max 20x: $200/month of dedicated agent credits.
- Team (Standard seats): $20/month per seat.
- Team (Premium seats): $100/month per seat.
- Enterprise (Seat-based Premium): $200/month per seat.
The Core Risk: Unexpected Pipeline Failures
The most important operational change is how Anthropic handles credit exhaustion. Once your monthly Agent SDK credit is depleted, all programmatic and automated requests will fail immediately unless you have manually enabled 'overflow billing' (also known as usage credits). If you do enable overflow billing, additional requests will be charged at standard Claude API rates.
Action Item for Engineering Teams: Audit your automated workflows before June 15. If you have CI/CD pipelines, nightly test sweeps, or internal Slack bots authenticating via a user's Claude subscription, those pipelines will halt mid-run the moment the monthly credit pool is exhausted. You must decide whether to enable overflow billing or migrate those workloads to a dedicated API key.
How to Manage the Transition
For business leaders, this billing split requires updating your AI automation budget. We recommend three immediate steps: First, identify every service using subscription-based authentication for automation. Second, calculate their historical usage to see if they will exceed the new credit limits. Third, configure overflow billing limits in your Anthropic console to prevent run-away API costs while ensuring pipeline continuity.
