GPT-5.5 Is Out — And It's Gunning Directly for Claude Opus 4.7
OpenAI dropped GPT-5.5 on April 23, and the framing is unmistakable: this is a direct play for the same territory Claude Opus 4.7 occupies. Agentic coding, long-horizon task execution, computer use. OpenAI is calling it 'a new class of intelligence for real work' and the benchmarks put it ahead of Opus 4.7 on several key evals — though not all of them.

What GPT-5.5 Actually Does Better

On Terminal-Bench 2.0 — which tests complex command-line workflows requiring planning, iteration, and tool coordination — GPT-5.5 scores 82.7% vs Claude Opus 4.7's 69.4%. That's a meaningful gap on agentic coding tasks that look a lot like real dev work.

On Expert-SWE (OpenAI's internal long-horizon coding eval with a median estimated human completion time of 20 hours), GPT-5.5 outperforms GPT-5.4. Anthropic doesn't publish a directly comparable number, but early testers who had access to both models during the GPT-5.5 testing period said it was noticeably stronger than Claude Opus 4.7 at 'reasoning and autonomy, catching issues in advance and predicting testing and review needs without explicit prompting.'

The efficiency story is also real. GPT-5.5 matches GPT-5.4's per-token latency while performing at a much higher intelligence level, and it uses fewer tokens to complete the same Codex tasks. OpenAI says on Artificial Analysis's Coding Index, GPT-5.5 delivers 'state-of-the-art intelligence at half the cost of competitive frontier coding models.'

Where Claude Still Holds Ground

The benchmark picture isn't one-sided. On BrowseComp (research and web navigation tasks), Claude Opus 4.7 scores 79.3% vs GPT-5.5's 84.4% — closer. On FrontierMath Tier 1-3, Claude Opus 4.7 scores 43.8% vs GPT-5.5's 51.7%, a real gap, but math benchmarks have historically been more sensitive to training data artifacts.

And on GDPval (which tests general knowledge and decision-making), GPT-5.5 scores 80.3% while GPT-5.5 Pro scores 82.3%. Opus 4.7 is at 67.3% on this one — a larger gap. But these are OpenAI's numbers, and the evals were selected and run by OpenAI. Take them as directionally useful, not definitive.

The real answer comes from production usage. Anthropic has a substantial head start on agentic deployment infrastructure (see: Managed Agents, Claude Code), and Claude's strengths in extended context, nuanced instruction following, and safety-sensitive tasks aren't fully captured by any benchmark currently in wide use.

What's in GPT-5.5 That Matters for Operators

GPT-5.5 is rolling out immediately to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT and Codex. The API is coming 'very soon' — OpenAI held it back to work through safety and security requirements for scale deployment. This is actually significant: it means API access (what most operators care about) is still behind the consumer rollout.

OpenAI also added their strongest safety controls yet, including targeted testing for cybersecurity and biology capabilities, plus a $25,000 bug bounty for security researchers to find vulnerabilities. That's a public signal that the safety stakes around this model are higher than previous releases.

For Codex users specifically: GPT-5.5 is now the default, and it's meaningfully better at holding context across large systems, handling ambiguous failures, and carrying refactors through the surrounding codebase without breaking unrelated code. If you're using Codex for anything production-adjacent, this is a real upgrade.

Field note

GPT-5.5 is clearly ahead of Claude Opus 4.7 on agentic coding benchmarks. But Anthropic's entire infrastructure story (Managed Agents, Claude Code Routines, session persistence) is something GPT-5.5 doesn't have an equivalent to. The model vs. the platform is still the more relevant comparison for teams building on either.

What This Means For You

If you're a Claude Code user wondering whether to switch: don't panic-switch based on benchmarks alone. GPT-5.5 is a stronger model on agentic coding evals, full stop. But Claude Code's infrastructure — Routines, the desktop redesign, Managed Agents persistence — gives Claude a platform advantage that raw model numbers don't capture.

If you're an operator choosing between Claude API and OpenAI API for an agent you're building from scratch: GPT-5.5 is now worth serious evaluation alongside Opus 4.7, especially for coding-heavy workflows. The efficiency improvement (fewer tokens per task) has real cost implications at scale.

If you use both: this release makes it more worthwhile to test task-specific routing. Some long-horizon coding tasks may perform better with GPT-5.5; complex instruction-following, research, and writing tasks may still favor Claude. The gap at the frontier is narrowing, which means model selection is increasingly about fit rather than obvious winner-loser.
