Not every product is available on every plan. Here's what you need:
- Free ($0) — Claude.ai web, Desktop app (limited), Mobile (limited). No access to Code, Cowork, or Chrome extension.
- Pro ($20/month) — Everything on Free plus Claude Code, Cowork, Chrome extension (Haiku model only), extended thinking, and Projects. 5x the Free usage limits.

Which Claude Product Should You Pick?
Most people should start with one or two products rather than trying to use everything. Here's a decision guide:
- General knowledge worker (writing, research, analysis) — Start with Claude.ai web or Desktop app.
- Software developer — Claude Code CLI if you like the terminal, VS Code extension if you prefer an IDE. Use both — they share conversation history.
- Developer who tests in the browser — Claude Code + Chrome extension. Bridge them with
claude --chrome. - Operations, marketing, or legal professional — Cowork with relevant plugins for autonomous file processing.
- Mobile-first user — Claude Mobile for calendar, health, messages, and voice.
- App builder or startup — Claude API for full programmatic control.
- Budget-conscious — Free plan on web and mobile. Upgrade to Pro when you need Code, Cowork, or Chrome.
- Power user — Max plan ($100–$200/month) for unrestricted Opus access across all products.
Key Differences That Catch People Off Guard
A few things that surprise people when switching between Claude products:
- Projects exist on Web/Desktop only. Claude Code uses CLAUDE.md files for the same purpose — persistent project instructions that load automatically.
- Artifacts are Web/Desktop exclusive. The IDE extensions and CLI don't have an artifacts panel. Claude Code writes directly to your filesystem instead.
- Cowork is Desktop-only. It requires the Claude Desktop app — you can't access Cowork from the web, mobile, or browser extension.
- Chrome extension model depends on your plan. Pro users get Haiku only. Max and above get model choice including Opus.
- The VS Code extension and CLI share conversations. Start in VS Code, continue in terminal with
claude --resume, or vice versa. - MCP works differently per product. Desktop and Code CLI support full MCP servers. Web uses Claude Apps (a managed MCP integration). Chrome and Mobile have no MCP support.
- Mobile has unique device integrations. Calendar, health data, messages, and location aren't available on any other Claude product.
Bottom Line
Claude isn't one product anymore — it's a family of seven, each optimized for a different context. The web app is your general-purpose workhorse. Claude Code is for developers who want an agent in their codebase. Cowork handles non-technical automation. The Chrome extension automates your browser. Mobile puts Claude in your pocket with device-native features. And the API lets you build anything custom.
The key insight is that these products complement each other rather than compete. A developer might use Claude Code for work, the Chrome extension for testing, and the mobile app for quick questions on the go — all on the same Pro or Max subscription.
