Claude in PowerPoint: What It Does, How to Set It Up
Anthropic's Claude now works inside Microsoft PowerPoint. It reads your templates, generates slides, and edits decks — all without leaving the app.

What Claude in PowerPoint Actually Does
The add-in opens as a sidebar panel inside PowerPoint. You type what you want in natural language, and Claude makes it happen directly in your deck. The key difference from other AI presentation tools: Claude reads your existing slide masters, layouts, fonts, and color schemes before it touches anything.
That means when you ask Claude to create a new section, it uses your corporate template — not some generic default. The output matches your brand guidelines without manual cleanup.
- Generate new slides from natural language descriptions using your existing templates
- Edit specific slides without regenerating the entire deck
- Convert bullet points into editable native charts, diagrams, and process flows
- Build full deck structures from a written outline or description
- Pull context from connected apps through connector integration
Everything Claude produces is native, editable PowerPoint — not static images. You can modify charts, adjust diagrams, and reformat text the same way you would with manually created elements.
Why This Matters for Presentation Workflows
Anyone who builds decks for a living knows the pain. You spend hours formatting slides, aligning elements, and making sure everything matches the template. The content itself takes a fraction of the time compared to making it look right.
Claude in PowerPoint attacks that formatting bottleneck directly. Instead of routing your content through a chatbot, then copy-pasting into slides, then fixing the formatting — you describe what you need and get template-compliant output immediately.
Early adopters are reporting that Claude delivers better template fidelity and more precise edits compared to Microsoft 365 Copilot — which has offered AI slide creation since 2023 but often struggles with complex corporate templates.

Who Gets Access
Claude in PowerPoint initially launched for Max ($100-200/month), Team, and Enterprise subscribers on February 5. Anthropic expanded access to Pro subscribers ($20/month) on February 19.

Through March 19, all paid plans get double the usage limit when using Claude in PowerPoint. If you've been on the fence, this is a good window to test it with real workflows.
You can switch between Sonnet 4.5 and Opus 4.6 within the add-in. Opus 4.6 is recommended for complex slide generation and multi-slide operations. Sonnet 4.5 works well for quick edits and simpler requests where speed matters more than depth.
Connector Support: Pulling in External Context
The February 19 expansion also added connector support. This means Claude in PowerPoint can pull information from linked apps and services — giving it access to more relevant context when generating or updating slides.
In practice, this lets you point Claude at data from connected tools and have it build slides from that context, rather than manually pasting information into the prompt. It reduces the friction between where your data lives and where your presentation needs to be.
What to Watch Out For
This is still a research preview, and there are real limitations to keep in mind before relying on it for high-stakes work.
- Chat history isn't preserved between sessions — you start fresh each time
- Not all advanced PowerPoint features are fully supported yet
- Team and Enterprise plans don't inherit custom data retention settings
- Not included in audit logs or the Compliance API
- Best used for drafts and iterations, not final client deliverables without human review
Anthropic warns: only use Claude in PowerPoint with trusted files. Prompt injection attacks can hide instructions in slide content to manipulate AI behavior. Don't open untrusted .pptx files with the add-in active.
Claude in PowerPoint vs Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft's own Copilot has been in PowerPoint since 2023, so the comparison is inevitable. The core difference comes down to template fidelity. Copilot generates slides that sometimes drift from your corporate template, especially with complex slide masters. Claude reads and respects the full template structure more consistently.
Copilot has the advantage of deeper Microsoft 365 integration — it connects natively with Word, Excel, Teams, and SharePoint. Claude's connector support is newer and more limited. If your workflow is entirely within the Microsoft ecosystem, Copilot may still be the more seamless choice. If template accuracy and edit precision matter more, Claude is worth testing.
How This Fits Into Anthropic's Enterprise Strategy
Claude in PowerPoint is part of a larger pattern. When Anthropic launched Opus 4.6 on February 5, the message was clear: they're moving beyond developer tools into the productivity apps where most knowledge workers actually spend their time.
Along with PowerPoint, Anthropic expanded Claude's Excel capabilities — including pivot table editing, chart modifications, and conditional formatting. The strategy is to embed Claude directly into the tools people already use, rather than asking them to switch to a separate AI interface.
This mirrors what they did with Claude Code for developers and Cowork for file management. PowerPoint and Excel extend that same approach to the core Microsoft Office suite.
Quick Takeaway
Claude in PowerPoint removes the formatting tax from presentation work. It reads your templates, generates native editable content, and lets you iterate through conversation instead of clicking through menus. It's available now to all paid Claude subscribers through the Microsoft add-in store.
Start with a deck that already has your corporate template applied. Ask Claude to add a section or convert some bullet points into a visual. See how well it matches your brand guidelines before scaling up to larger tasks. The double usage promotion runs through March 19 — take advantage of it to find where Claude fits in your presentation workflow.
