Anthropic Opens Milan Office: Europe's Sixth Hub and a Play for Italian Enterprise

Anthropic opened its sixth European office in Milan on May 27, less than a week after securing $65 billion in Series H funding. The move landed nine Italian enterprise customers at launch, including Generali (insurance), Pirelli (manufacturing), and Enel (energy). This is not a small local play. It is Anthropic doubling down on Europe as a serious enterprise market.

Why Milan Matters

Europe is Anthropic's enterprise proving ground. With offices in London, Dublin, Paris, Zurich, Munich, and now Milan, Anthropic is building the infrastructure to serve large continental corporations on their home turf. Milan specifically puts Anthropic inside one of Europe's largest economies and directly into the Italian enterprise tech ecosystem, where regulated industries like insurance, energy, and manufacturing are actively piloting AI.

The companies already committing are not startups testing Claude for fun. They are Fortune 500-class enterprises deploying Claude into production. That pattern, large enterprises adopting early in a market, is exactly what preceded Claude's dominance in US enterprise.

The Full Customer Picture

The official customer announcement covers nine Italian organizations across five industries. In financial services: Generali Group, one of the world's largest insurance companies, and Unipol Group, a major Italian insurer. In life sciences: Angelini Pharma and Bracco Group, both significant players in Italian healthcare and pharmaceuticals. In energy: Enel Group. In automotive: Pirelli. And in technology: JAKALA, a data and AI consultancy; Satispay, the fintech super-app serving 6 million Italian users; and Bending Spoons, the consumer-app group behind some of Europe's most downloaded applications. Spreading commitments across this many regulated industries in a single market at launch is uncommon. It suggests Anthropic's enterprise sales team was working Italy well before the office opened.

The business outcomes those customers report are concrete. JAKALA deployed Claude across more than 3,000 seats and estimates 70 percent time savings for senior teams. Satispay compressed an 18-month product roadmap down to 7 months using Claude. At Bending Spoons, the majority of code changes are now co-authored with Claude Code. These are not pilot numbers from companies running small experiments. They are production metrics from organizations with millions of users and real SLAs. The common thread across all three is that productivity gains occurred in core product work, not peripheral tasks. When enterprises in heavily regulated industries report that kind of productivity improvement in their central operations, the technology has typically moved past the experiment phase into the infrastructure phase.

The EMEA Growth Story

The Milan opening is part of a broader EMEA acceleration. Anthropic has confirmed that EMEA is now its fastest-growing region globally, with run-rate revenue up 9x year-on-year and large-business accounts up 10x over the same period. Those are not incremental improvements. They reflect a step-change in how European enterprises are committing to Claude as a core part of their AI strategy. The pattern mirrors what happened in US enterprise roughly 18 months earlier: a handful of large early adopters, production deployments that produce visible results, then a cascade of procurement decisions from peers in the same industry who do not want to fall behind.

Chris Ciauri, Anthropic's Managing Director of International, framed the company's intent at the opening: "We are here to support Italian enterprise, Italian research, and Italian culture through a safe AI transition." Including the word 'culture' is deliberate. Anthropic is positioning this as a long-term institutional presence. That framing matters to European regulators and to the large enterprises that partner with Anthropic on multi-year commitments. It follows co-founder Chris Olah's appearance at Pope Leo XIV's Magnifica Humanitas encyclical presentation in Rome on May 25, where Olah called for broader stakeholder participation in AI development outcomes.

The Hiring Signal

Chris Ciauri said the company will continue expanding hiring across Europe. For a company that just raised $65 billion, continued hiring expansion in a specific region typically means they see real revenue opportunity there. Milan being singled out for immediate expansion signals that Europe's largest enterprises are genuinely adopting Claude at scale, not running cautious evaluations.

The Leadership Team

Anthropic's Southern European operation already has named leadership in place. Thomas Remy, Head of Southern Europe, is based in Paris and covers Italy alongside France and adjacent markets. Chris Ciauri, as Managing Director of International, oversees Anthropic's full expansion outside the United States. The company has also added Liam Booth-Smith to its external affairs team in London. Booth-Smith was previously chief of staff to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. That hire gives Anthropic direct experience navigating senior government policy across Europe at a moment when AI regulation, procurement rules, and national AI strategies are actively being written. For enterprise customers evaluating long-term AI partners, team composition is a signal about institutional seriousness.

What This Means For You

If you're building products or services in Europe, Anthropic just made a structural bet that Europe matters. That typically means enterprise pricing, SLAs, and support will improve over the next 12 months. For teams already using Claude at scale, this signals Anthropic's confidence that European customers will stick around and expand: this is not a temporary push into a market they plan to abandon later. The practical implication is direct: if your organization has been waiting for Anthropic to have local presence and support infrastructure before committing, that threshold is now cleared for Italy and most major European markets. Local account teams, local legal entities, and local government relationships are in place or actively being built.
