Claude vs Perplexity: Coding Agent vs Cited Search Engine
Claude and Perplexity solve different problems. Claude is a frontier model built for agentic coding, long-context analysis, and tool-using agents. Perplexity is a search-first answer engine that returns cited, multi-source results in real time. This page lays out where each one wins so you can pick fast.
The short answer
These tools barely overlap. Claude is a model and a coding agent. Perplexity is a research interface that routes your question across several models, including paid access to Claude Opus 4.6, GPT-5.4, Gemini 3.1 Pro, and its own in-house Sonar. If you are building software or analyzing large bodies of code and documents, you want Claude. If you need fast, cited answers grounded in current information, you want Perplexity.
Pick Claude for agentic coding and long-context work. Pick Perplexity for cited research and current-info lookup. Many operators use both.
Where Claude wins
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding environment, and Sonnet 5 is the current starting point because it is available in Claude Code and is the default on Claude Free and Pro. Compare its coding results with Perplexity on the research, repository, and citation workflows that matter to you rather than relying on a broad strength claim.
- Agentic coding: best in class, with Opus 4.8 planning before editing
- Long-context analysis: 1M tokens on Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6 at flat rates, no surcharge
- Tool-using agents: Anthropic created the Model Context Protocol and has first-class MCP support
- Production assistant and RAG workloads across big codebases and document sets
One note on availability: Fable 5 was restored globally on July 1, 2026. Mythos 5 is limited to approved Project Glasswing organizations. For a generally available Claude starting point, use Sonnet 5 in Claude Code or the API.
Where Perplexity wins
Perplexity is built around web search. It returns real-time answers with citations to multiple sources, which makes it strong for research and verifying current facts. Its Comet AI browser went free across iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac on March 18 2026, and it handles agentic browsing tasks inside the browser. Voice works in Comet, and image input is supported.
- Fast cited research with real-time, multi-source answers
- Current-info lookup grounded in live web results
- Agentic browsing through the free Comet browser
- Voice in Comet and image input support
The limits are the flip side of that focus. Perplexity is research-first, not built for content generation or coding. Comet does agentic browsing, not software development. There is no agentic coding here.
Pricing compared
Claude prices by API token. Opus 4.8 is $5 in and $25 out per million tokens, with a Fast Mode at $10/$50. Sonnet 4.6 is $3/$15. Haiku 4.5 is $1/$5. Batch processing is 50% cheaper, and prompt caching cuts cached input by up to 90%. Consumer tiers are Free, Pro, and Max.
Perplexity prices by subscription. Free, Pro at $20 a month with roughly 20 Deep Research runs per day, plus Max and Enterprise. The Comet browser is free across all platforms.
Which to pick
- Building or refactoring software: Claude, with Claude Code
- Analyzing a large codebase or document set: Claude, using the 1M context window
- Production assistant, agents, or RAG: Claude, with native MCP
- Fast research with citations: Perplexity
- Checking current facts in real time: Perplexity
- Agentic browsing in a free browser: Perplexity Comet
Different jobs, not direct rivals. Claude is the build-and-reason engine. Perplexity is the find-and-cite engine. If your week includes both, run both.
