Compare/Claude Code vs Cursor: Agentic CLI vs AI-Native IDE

Claude Code vs Cursor: Agentic CLI vs AI-Native IDE

Both tools target serious agentic coding, but they take different shapes. Claude Code is Anthropic's dedicated CLI built around Claude models with a 1M-token context window. Cursor is Anysphere's AI-native IDE that runs Claude, Gemini, and GPT side by side with its own Composer agent. Here is where each one wins.

The short answer

Pick Claude Code if you want the strongest agentic coding model, a 1M-token context window at flat rates, and a CLI that plans before it edits and runs long autonomous tasks. Pick Cursor if you want an AI-native IDE that switches between Claude, Gemini, and GPT, edits across files in a graphical editor, and fans out up to 8 parallel cloud agents on isolated Git branches.

Verdict

Claude Code for raw agentic coding depth and large-context work. Cursor for a multi-model IDE and parallel cloud agents. Many builders use both: Claude Code in the terminal, Cursor in the editor.

Where Claude Code wins

  • Context window: 1M tokens on Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6 at flat rates with no surcharge. Cursor caps at 200K per request.
  • Agentic coding: Opus 4.8 is the best agentic coding model in class. It plans before editing and sustains long autonomous runs.
  • Big-codebase analysis: the 1M window reads sprawling repositories and large document sets in one pass without aggressive summarization.
  • MCP: Anthropic created the Model Context Protocol, so Claude Code has first-class tool-and-agent support.
  • Model starting point: Sonnet 5 is available in Claude Code and is Anthropic's default on Claude Free and Pro. Compare alternatives with your own repository-level quality, latency, and cost tests.

Where Cursor wins

  • Multi-model: runs Claude, Gemini, and GPT with Auto-select, so you are not locked to one provider.
  • IDE experience: a full graphical editor with Agent Mode that edits, tests, and runs across files.
  • Parallel agents: Background and Cloud Agents run up to 8 in parallel on isolated Git branches, plus browser-driven end-to-end testing.
  • Its own agent: Composer 2.0 is a native agent with RL-trained self-summarization to stretch the 200K per-request window.
  • Reviewer add-on: Bugbot automated review is available on Teams plans.

Pricing compared

Claude Code bills by Claude API tokens or a consumer plan. Per million tokens: Opus 4.8 is $5 in and $25 out ($10/$50 in Fast Mode), Sonnet 4.6 is $3/$15, and Haiku 4.5 is $1/$5. Batch runs are 50% cheaper and prompt caching cuts cached input by up to 90%. Consumer tiers are Free, Pro, and Max.

Cursor uses credit-based pricing: Hobby is free, Pro is $20/mo with $20 of frontier credits, Pro+ is $60/mo, Ultra is $200/mo at 20x usage, and Teams is $40/user/mo. Bugbot review adds $40/user/mo on Teams. Credit overages can push effective cost to $40 to $50/mo for power users.

Verdict

Cursor's flat $20 entry is simple to start. But heavy users hit credit overages, and Claude Code's flat 1M-token rates plus batch and caching discounts often win on cost per token at scale.

A note on models and access

Fable 5 was restored globally on July 1, 2026. Mythos 5 is limited to approved Project Glasswing organizations. For this comparison, Sonnet 5 is the relevant Claude Code starting point because it is available in Claude Code and is Anthropic's default on Claude Free and Pro. Neither tool generates images. Claude offers web search and image input; Cursor offers @Web search, @Docs, and image input.

Which to pick

  • Choose Claude Code for the deepest agentic coding, long-context analysis over big codebases, production assistants, RAG, and tool-using agents.
  • Choose Cursor for an AI-native IDE, multi-model flexibility, and parallel cloud agents on isolated branches.
  • Watch the tradeoffs: Claude Code has no native image generation and Opus is premium-priced; Cursor's 200K context is smaller than the 1M flagships and overages add up.
