How to Find Security Vulnerabilities in Your Code Using Claude (Without Waiting for Enterprise)
Field note

🔄 Updated May 21, 2026: Claude Security entered public beta on May 15. This guide's workarounds are still valid, but you can now use Claude Security directly for enterprise-grade vulnerability scanning.

Claude Security is now in public beta (launched May 15, 2026) and available to all Claude users. Here's how to leverage Claude for vulnerability scanning — from basic code review to comprehensive threat modeling.

Why Claude Is Better at Finding Vulnerabilities

Traditional SAST tools (Snyk, Checkmarx) look for patterns: • 'var x = request.get()' → vulnerability risk • 'SQL.query(string)' → injection vulnerability

Claude understands context. It sees: • Where the data comes from • How it's used • What the developer intended • What could go wrong in edge cases

Result: fewer false positives, more real vulnerabilities caught, and remediation suggestions that actually work.

Technique 1: Code Review with Context

Paste a function and ask Claude to analyze it:

• 'Review this function for SQL injection vulnerabilities. Assume user input comes from request.query and request.body.' • 'Walk through this code line by line. Where could an attacker provide untrusted input?' • 'This function handles payment processing. What security assumptions are being made? Are they safe?'

Claude will trace data flow, identify trust boundaries, and flag logical vulnerabilities traditional tools miss.

Technique 2: Threat Modeling

Ask Claude to threat-model your code:

• 'List all external inputs to this API endpoint. For each input, what's the worst an attacker could do?' • 'This codebase uses X library. What are known vulnerabilities in this library, and how is our code exposed?' • 'What authentication bypass vulnerabilities might exist in this login flow?'

Claude can identify vulnerability classes you didn't think to test for.

Technique 3: Codebase Scanning (With Your API Key)

For larger codebases, use Claude's 200k context window:

  1. Paste entire files or modules (up to ~50k tokens)
  2. Ask: 'Scan this codebase for authentication bypasses, injection vulnerabilities, and information disclosure.'
  3. Claude will produce a security audit with specifics

For very large repos, run this per-module or per-service. It's like hiring a security consultant for each audit.

Technique 4: Fix Generation

Found a vulnerability? Ask Claude to fix it:

• 'Here's a SQL injection vulnerability in this function. Write a fixed version using parameterized queries.' • 'This authentication logic is flawed. Rewrite it securely.'

Claude generates production-ready fixes, not just theoretical patches.

Practical Example: Finding an XSS Vulnerability

Here's a real prompt:

I have a React component that displays user comments. The comments come from a database:

const Comment = ({ comment }) => (
  <div>{comment.text}</div>
);

Comments are added via an input field and stored in the database. Are there any security vulnerabilities here? How would an attacker exploit this?

Claude immediately identifies: React auto-escapes text by default, but if the component were using dangerouslySetInnerHTML, this would be XSS. It also notes that database-stored XSS is possible if the input validation isn't strict.

Best Practices for Claude-Powered Code Review

• Provide context: Tell Claude the tech stack, libraries, and threat model • Be specific: 'Find authentication bugs' vs. 'Find all bugs' gets better results • Iterate: If Claude misses something, ask follow-up questions • Verify: Don't blindly trust Claude; understand the vulnerability yourself • Combine with tools: Use Claude alongside traditional SAST for comprehensive coverage

When Claude Security Gets Released to Pro

Anthropic's upcoming Claude Security product will automate much of this. But the principles stay the same: • AI-powered scanning understands intent, not just patterns • Context matters more than regex • Vulnerability discovery is now a reasoning problem, not a pattern-matching problem

Starting to use Claude for security analysis now means you'll be ready to scale with Claude Security later.

Vulnerability discovery is becoming an AI-native problem. The tools that were state-of-the-art 2 years ago are already falling behind. Claude gives you a way to stay ahead—today, without waiting for a product announcement. Use it.
