What Are Claude Skills?
A Claude Skill is a pre-built integration that gives Claude the ability to do something it normally can't. Examples:
- Web Search Skill: Let Claude search the live internet in real time
- Document Analysis: Upload PDFs, spreadsheets, or documents for Claude to analyze
- Zapier Integration: Connect Claude to 5,000+ other apps (HubSpot, Slack, Stripe, etc.)
- Email Drafting: Let Claude draft and send emails on your behalf
Think of Skills as pre-authorized connections. Instead of giving Claude a generic API key (risky), you install a Skill, authorize it once, and Claude can use it within your conversations.
How to Install a Skill
- Open Claude.ai and go to your profile settings
- Click "Integrations" or "Skills" (location varies by Claude version)
- Browse available Skills or search for one
- Click "Install" and follow the authorization flow
- Grant the necessary permissions (e.g., "allow Claude to search the web")
- Return to Claude and start using it—it's available in all your conversations
Which Skills Are Actually Worth Using
Not every Skill is useful. Here are the ones that genuinely save time:
Web Search — Turn this on permanently. Lets Claude access real-time information, current events, and live data. Essential if you're asking about anything breaking in the last 24 hours.
Zapier Integration — If you use any of the 5,000+ Zapier-connected apps (Slack, HubSpot, Salesforce, Google Sheets, etc.), this Skill lets Claude trigger workflows. Example: "Create a Salesforce opportunity based on this email."
Document Upload & Analysis — You can already upload files to Claude, but the Document Skill adds better handling for large PDFs, spreadsheets, and structured data. Good if you're processing bulk documents.
Email Drafting — Only useful if you use Gmail and want Claude to draft emails. Less common than you'd think, because Claude can already draft emails in the conversation—you just copy-paste into Gmail.
Skills vs. Custom Integrations
This matters if you're a developer. Skills are pre-built and easy. Custom integrations are more powerful but require coding.
Use a Skill if: You want a quick integration with a popular service (Slack, Zapier, Stripe) and don't need customization.
Build a custom integration if: You need Claude to do something specific to your business (e.g., call your internal API, trigger custom workflows) and no Skill exists for it.
Most people should start with Skills. Custom integrations are for power users.
A Real Example: Using Web Search + Zapier
Scenario: You want Claude to monitor for breaking AI news and send a Slack message to your team when something major drops.
- Install Web Search Skill → gives Claude live internet access
- Install Zapier Skill → gives Claude ability to send Slack messages
- Ask Claude: "Monitor for major Claude or OpenAI announcements. If anything major breaks, send a Slack message to #ai-news with a summary."
- Claude uses Web Search to check news, Zapier to send the message
No code. No API keys. Just conversation.
Privacy & Security Notes
- Skills are authorized through Anthropic's servers, so you're trusting Anthropic to handle the integration safely
- Each Skill asks for specific permissions (e.g., "read Gmail" but not "delete Gmail")
- You can revoke any Skill at any time from Settings
- Anthropic doesn't sell your data or share your Skills usage with third parties (they promise this explicitly)
If you're uncomfortable with a Skill's permissions, don't install it. There's no shame in staying simple.
The Bottom Line
Claude Skills are underrated. Most people don't know they exist. If you use Claude regularly, turn on Web Search (seriously, do this now). If you use Zapier or Slack, install those Skills too. They're not flashy, but they make Claude genuinely more capable.
Start with one. Install Web Search. Then explore others based on what services you actually use.
