Claude Skills Explained: Finding, Installing, and Using Them Like a Pro
Claude Skills are AI-powered mini-tools that extend what Claude can do. They're similar to GPT plugins or browser extensions—small, focused applications that add new capabilities to Claude without cluttering your main chat. Since they went live at claude.com/skills, they've been the biggest thing we've missed covering. Here's what they actually are and how to use them.

What Are Claude Skills?

A Skill is a lightweight application that Claude can call when it needs to do something specific. Think of them like Claude's toolbox: web search, image generation, PDF reading, calendar access, Slack integration, etc. You browse Claude.com/skills, install the ones you need, and Claude automatically uses them when relevant. If you ask Claude to 'search for the latest AI news,' Claude sees you have the Web Search skill and runs it without you having to ask explicitly.

The key difference from plugins: Skills are simpler, more focused, and more deeply integrated into Claude's interface. You're not context-switching to a plugin dashboard—Claude just does the work and comes back with the results in chat.

Built-In vs. Installable Skills

Some Skills come pre-installed with every Claude account (these vary by plan). Most require explicit installation. To see what's available and what you've already installed, go to claude.com/skills in your web browser.

  • Web Search: Find current information, recent news, real-time data. Available on Pro, Max, and Team plans.
  • Document Upload & Analysis: Read PDFs, Word docs, spreadsheets. Built-in on all plans.
  • Image Generation: Create images from text descriptions (Anthropic's built-in generator).
  • Image Recognition: Analyze and extract text from images you upload.
  • Code Execution: Run Python code, test scripts, visualize data (sandbox environment).
  • Third-party integrations: Google Drive, Notion, Linear, Slack (if you install them and authorize).

How to Install a Skill

Installing a Skill takes 30 seconds:

  • Open claude.com/skills in your browser.
  • Scroll through the Skills library. Read descriptions to find what you need.
  • Click on a Skill. Review what permissions it needs (e.g., Google Drive requires read/write access to your files).
  • Click 'Install' or 'Connect.' Some Skills just activate; others require OAuth authorization (you'll be asked to log in to the service).
  • Return to chat. Claude will automatically use that Skill when relevant to your conversation.

When Claude Automatically Uses a Skill

Once installed, you don't have to remember to activate Skills—Claude uses them automatically when needed. Examples:

  • Web Search: You ask 'What's happening with Anthropic today?' Claude recognizes the current-events intent and runs Web Search automatically.
  • Google Drive: You say 'Summarize the Q4 report from my Google Drive' → Claude searches your Drive and pulls the file.
  • Image Generation: You ask 'Create a dark editorial image of an AI agent working' → Claude generates the image and shows it in chat.
  • Code Execution: You ask 'Create a Python script that plots sales by region' → Claude writes the code and runs it, showing you the visualization.
  • Notion: You say 'Add this to my Notion database' → Claude connects to Notion and creates the entry.
Field note

Pro tip: If Claude doesn't use a Skill you thought it would, you can ask explicitly. 'Use the Web Search Skill to find...' or 'Can you check my Google Drive for...' makes it clear.

Best Practices for Skills

Here's how to get the most out of Skills without running into gotchas:

  • Install only what you use. More Skills = more permissions, more potential for confusion. Start with one (Web Search is a good first one) and add others as you need them.
  • Check permissions before installing. If a Skill asks for write access to a critical service (your Gmail, your entire Notion workspace), make sure that's what you want.
  • Be explicit in sensitive work. If you're working with private/confidential data, tell Claude not to use certain Skills. 'Solve this problem without using Web Search or Google Drive.'
  • Test Skills in low-stakes conversations first. Before you ask Claude to create a Notion entry for your most important project, try it with something simple.
  • Refresh authorization if a Skill stops working. Sometimes OAuth tokens expire. Go back to claude.com/skills, click the Skill, and re-authorize if needed.
  • Web Search isn't always fresh. Claude's Web Search Skill is good, but it has crawl delays. For breaking news or ultra-recent updates, you might need manual verification.

Skills vs. GPT Plugins vs. Native Features

If you're coming from ChatGPT or trying to decide which platform to use, here's the difference:

  • Claude Skills: Lightweight, auto-triggering, focused on specific tasks. Simple permission model. No extra UI clutter.
  • GPT Plugins: Heavier, more complex, require explicit activation in conversation. More powerful for niche use cases.
  • Native Features: Built into Claude from the start (document analysis, image recognition). No installation needed.

Five Skills You Should Install Today

If you're new to Skills, start here:

  • Web Search: Find real-time information. Essential if you ask Claude about current events.
  • Google Drive (if you use Drive): Let Claude read your docs, sheets, and PDFs directly from Drive without uploading them manually.
  • Notion: Write to your Notion database from chat. Great for quick capture—ask Claude to add a task, and it goes straight to your Notion inbox.
  • Linear: If you use Linear for project management, connect Claude so it can create tickets, check statuses, and update issues.
  • Slack: Have Claude post to channels or send you DMs. Useful for notifications, summaries, or quick updates to your team.

What This Means For You

Skills are how Claude becomes your actual work assistant, not just a chat interface. Start small—install Web Search, use it for a week. Then add Google Drive and Notion. Once you're comfortable with auto-triggering, layer in team tools like Slack and Linear. The goal isn't to install everything; it's to build Claude into your actual workflow without friction.
