How to Import Your ChatGPT Memories Into Claude (Step-by-Step)
Claude now lets you import your stored preferences and context from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and other AI providers. Here's exactly how to do it in under two minutes.

Launched March 2, 2026. Memory import is available on all Claude plans, including free. You don't need a Pro or Max subscription to use this feature.
What the Memory Import Feature Does
Claude's memory system stores things like your communication preferences, how you like responses formatted, the tools and projects you regularly work with, and any corrections you've given the AI over time. The import feature lets you extract that same type of information from a competing AI assistant and load it into Claude's memory in one step. Project Glasswing: How Anthropic Is Using Claud...
The supported sources include ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, and essentially any chatbot that stores user preferences. The process uses a prompt-based extraction method — no file exports, no API tokens, no technical setup required.
- Merges, doesn't overwrite — imported memories are added to any existing Claude memories, so nothing is lost
- Free for everyone — memory was previously paid-only; import unlocks it even on the free plan
- Reversible — you can review, edit, or delete any imported memory from your settings
- Work-focused — Claude prioritizes professional context; personal details unrelated to work may not be retained
How to Import Your Memories: Step-by-Step
The entire process takes under two minutes. Here's exactly what to do.
Step 1: Get the Extraction Prompt from Claude
Go to claude.com/import-memory. Anthropic provides a ready-made prompt on this page that's written specifically to extract all stored memories and preferences from any AI chatbot. Copy the entire prompt.
Alternatively, you can skip straight to the import flow by going to claude.ai/settings/capabilities and clicking "Start import" — this also shows you the extraction prompt.
Step 2: Paste the Prompt Into Your Current AI Provider
Open ChatGPT (or Gemini, Copilot, etc.) and start a new chat. Paste the extraction prompt and send it. The AI will output everything it has stored about you — your preferences, instructions, writing style, projects, tools, and any behavioral notes — in a single formatted text block.
If you're using ChatGPT, there's also a manual route: go to Settings → Personalization → Manage Memories, then copy the memory entries listed there directly. Either method works.
Step 3: Copy the Output
Select all the text that your current AI generated and copy it. This is the raw memory dump that Claude will process.
Step 4: Paste Into Claude's Memory Settings
Go to claude.ai/settings/capabilities. You'll see a memory import card — click "Start import" if you haven't already. Paste the copied text into the input field, then click "Add to memory". Claude will process the text and extract individual memory items from it.
Step 5: Review What Was Imported
After the import completes, click "See what Claude learned about you" to review the imported memories. Claude breaks the raw text down into discrete memory items — things like "prefers concise responses" or "works in a B2B SaaS company." If anything looks wrong or you don't want it stored, click "Manage memory" to edit or delete individual entries.
Processing time: Imported memories may take up to 24 hours to fully integrate. Claude processes memory updates in daily synthesis cycles rather than in real time, so you might not see the full effect in your very next conversation.
What Carries Over (and What Doesn't)
Claude's memory system is optimized for professional and work-related context. The import works best for:
- Communication preferences (tone, length, format)
- Technical context (tools, languages, frameworks you use)
- Project and business background
- Instructions you've given the AI about how to respond
- Corrections — things you've told the AI to stop doing
Claude is less likely to retain purely personal details that aren't relevant to work. If your ChatGPT memory includes things like your favorite movies or dietary preferences, those might not carry over — and that's intentional. Claude is designed as a work collaborator first.
How to Export Your Claude Memories
The feature works both ways. If you want a backup of what Claude has stored about you — or want to move your Claude context somewhere else — go to Settings → Capabilities → View and edit your memory. You can see exactly what Claude has stored and copy it.
You can also ask Claude directly in any chat: "Write out your memories of me verbatim." Claude will output everything it has stored in a copyable format. Save that to a local file as a backup or paste it into another service.
Why Anthropic Built This Now
The timing is deliberate. Claude has been rising fast — it's currently the top free iOS app in Apple's App Store, a spot normally held by ChatGPT. Anthropic recently committed to keeping Claude ad-free after ChatGPT introduced ads for free users, which drove significant switching intent.
Memory import removes the last major friction point in switching. The reason most people stayed with their existing AI assistant wasn't feature gaps — it was sunk cost. Months of trained context, preferences, and instructions represent real value that people didn't want to throw away. By making that portable, Anthropic eliminates the switching cost entirely.
Google has signaled it's working on a similar feature for Gemini, though no timeline has been announced. ChatGPT allows account-to-account memory transfers within OpenAI but has no equivalent cross-provider tool. For now, Claude is the only major AI assistant that lets you bring your context with you from competitors.
