Anthropic Quietly Tests Removing Claude Code from Pro Plan—Now Costs $100/Month
Anthropic is testing a major pricing change: Claude Code is moving off the $20 Pro plan and exclusively to the Max tier at $100/month. The...

What Changed
The core shift: Pro subscription ($20/month) no longer includes Claude Code. Max subscribers ($100/month) keep it. Anthropic says it's testing this on roughly 2% of new Pro signups, but the change is already reflected in official pricing documentation and in-app subscription flows.
The company's head of growth, Jared Kaplan, clarified on April 22 that this is a limited test—but the documentation change suggests Anthropic is moving toward making it permanent.
Why This Matters
Claude Code is no longer a "nice to have" bonus for Pro users—it's become the center of Claude's value proposition. Developers use it for:
- Writing and debugging code in conversation
- Analyzing existing codebases
- Running local scripts and generating test files
- Creating full applications in minutes
Moving it to Max-only creates a sharp price ceiling. Either you pay $20/month for basic Claude, or you jump to $100/month to get Code.
The Inconsistency Problem
Anthropic's documentation is mixed. Some pages still show Pro includes Claude Code. Others don't. Customer support threads show confusion, with Pro users reporting they were never told about the change and only found out when trying to use Code in their chat.
This inconsistency matters because it signals uncertainty on Anthropic's end—and it's frustrating users who were grandfathered in under old terms and now see the feature being pulled.
What Anthropic Is Actually Doing
This is a monetization play. Claude Code generates significant value, and Anthropic is realizing it can charge for it separately. The test on 2% of new signups serves two purposes:
- Validate the move: See if new Pro users accept the loss, or if it drives them to upgrade or leave.
- Buy time: Grandfather existing Pro users while the rollout is small, avoiding immediate backlash.
If the test succeeds, expect this to roll out to all new Pro signups within weeks.
What This Means For You
If you're a Pro user today: Keep using Claude Code while you have access. Screenshot your workflows. If you rely on Code, start budgeting for a Max upgrade, because this test will likely become permanent.
If you're evaluating Claude for coding: Don't default to Pro. Jump straight to Max. It's the only plan that guarantees Code access long-term.
If you're comparing Claude to ChatGPT Plus: This pricing move widens the gap. ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) includes Code Interpreter, which is Claude Code's direct competitor. Anthropic is ceding that price point.
The bigger picture: Anthropic is aggressively monetizing Claude's differentiated features. First it was custom knobs and extended context for Plus subscribers. Now Code is moving to Max. This is standard SaaS pricing evolution—but it creates friction for the developers who built workflows around Pro-tier access.
