Anthropic Just Passed OpenAI in Business Customer Adoption — What That Means If You're Choosing an AI Platform
For the first time ever, Anthropic has more verified business customers than OpenAI. The data comes from Ramp, a fintech platform that tracks how over 50,000 companies actually spend money on AI tools. And the shift is dramatic — it's not close.

What the Numbers Actually Show

Ramp's monthly AI Index report is built on real transaction data from its clients' expense accounts — not surveys, not estimates. In May 2026, 34.4% of the businesses Ramp tracks are paying for Anthropic services, edging out OpenAI's 32.3%. It's the first time Anthropic has held the top spot.

But here's what's more important than the headline: the rate of change. A year ago, only 9% of Ramp's surveyed businesses were paying for Anthropic. That's 26 percentage points of growth in 12 months. Over the same period, OpenAI dropped 1%. Andrej Karpathy Just Joined Anthropic—Why This ...

Why This Happened — And Why It's Not Just Hype

Anthropic's strategy was surgical. They didn't go after general consumers or chase OpenAI's ChatGPT masses. Instead, they started with technical teams — developers, security engineers, financial analysts — where Claude's reasoning and code generation advantages were immediately obvious.

Ramp economist Ara Kharazian explained it bluntly: "Anthropic started with a very technical customer base, focused on their needs, really succeeded in execution, and then started broadening out through tools like Cowork." That methodical climb from early technical adopters to mainstream business is exactly how you win enterprise markets.

The Geography of Dominance

Anthropic already dominated certain high-value segments — finance, tech, professional services. Those sectors knew quality when they saw it, and Claude delivered on reliability and accuracy where it mattered most. The real story now is that Anthropic is winning in other industries too. The advantage used to be concentration in vertical tech; now it's spreading horizontally.

One Big Caveat

Ramp's data covers companies that use Ramp's expense platform, which skews toward startups and high-growth tech companies. It's not representative of every business in America. That said, the sample of 50,000+ companies is large enough to matter, and the trend is confirmed by other third-party measures — OpenRouter's leaderboard, for example, shows OpenAI ranked below Anthropic since December 2025.

Field note

🎯 The Real Win: This isn't about market size yet. It's about momentum. Anthropic went from 9% to 34.4% adoption while OpenAI stalled. That velocity suggests the market understands Claude is the more trustworthy choice for serious work.

What This Means For You

If you're evaluating Claude vs ChatGPT for your team, this data backs up what technical teams already know: Claude is winning on reliability, reasoning, and actual business outcomes. The adoption curve isn't just brand preference — it's companies voting with their credit cards.

For Anthropic, this is validation that the "build for professionals first" strategy works. For OpenAI, it's a signal that market leadership isn't guaranteed, especially when competitors execute better on what matters to paying customers.

The broader implication: the AI market is consolidating around quality, not hype. And right now, Anthropic has the momentum.
