⚠️ Updated April 23, 2026: Claude Mythos has been officially announced and is in early access testing with select customers. The leak that was the focus of this article — which exposed draft materials before public announcement — is now superseded by official announcements. Mythos is confirmed as the Capybara-tier model and is being rolled out to enterprise customers.
Update: We now know Mythos belongs to a new model tier Anthropic is calling "Capybara" — sitting above Opus in the model hierarchy. See our full deep dive: Claude Capybara: Everything We Know About Anthropic's New Model Tier.
Anthropic has confirmed it is developing and testing a new AI model — codenamed Claude Mythos — after an accidental data leak exposed draft blog posts and internal documents sitting in an unsecured, publicly searchable data cache.
The leak, first reported by Fortune and separately confirmed by security researchers, revealed that Mythos is described internally as "by far the most powerful AI model we've ever developed" — and that Anthropic itself has flagged it as posing unprecedented cybersecurity risks.
What the Leak Revealed
The unsecured data cache contained close to 3,000 assets linked to Anthropic's blog that had not been publicly published. Among them was a draft blog post announcing Claude Mythos and introducing a new model tier called Capybara — described as "larger and more intelligent than our Opus models, which were, until now, our most powerful."
That would represent a fourth tier above Anthropic's current lineup of Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus — a significant architectural shift for the company's model family.
The leaked documents also contained details of a planned invite-only CEO summit in Europe, part of Anthropic's enterprise sales push to large corporate customers.
Anthropic Confirms 'Step Change' in Capabilities
After Fortune contacted Anthropic, the company removed public access to the data store and issued a statement acknowledging the breach. An Anthropic spokesperson confirmed that Claude Mythos is real, currently in early access testing with select customers, and represents "a step change" in AI performance.
Anthropic attributed the leak to "human error" in the configuration of its content management system, describing the exposed material as "early drafts of content considered for publication."
What 'Unprecedented Cybersecurity Risks' Actually Means
Language like "unprecedented cybersecurity risks" in an official company document is not standard marketing copy — it is the kind of phrasing that appears in risk disclosures and safety briefings designed to be taken seriously. The most plausible interpretation is that Mythos exhibits significantly elevated capability in domains that are dual-use by nature: writing and debugging complex code, identifying software vulnerabilities, generating convincing phishing content, and assisting with the kind of step-by-step technical problem solving that offensive security work requires.
Security Auditing and the Guardrail Dilemma
The leak of Mythos details highlights the growing challenge frontier AI labs face in securing their research. As models gain capabilities in software development and vulnerability discovery, they become high-value targets for espionage. Anthropic's response has focused on hardening their internal storage infrastructure, but the breach shows that even advanced labs are susceptible to sophisticated infiltration efforts.
From a policy perspective, the Mythos leak will likely accelerate government oversight of private AI development. Regulators are already drafting guidelines that treat autonomous cyber-agents as dual-use technologies, requiring strict reporting when models exceed specific training compute thresholds. For Anthropic, balancing public transparency with strict security safeguards will remain a defining challenge for the Capybara tier.
