Claude for Desktop Renamed to Claude Code: What Changed and Why It Matters

Anthropic renamed Claude for Desktop to Claude Code today. This isn't just cosmetic - the rebrand comes with new capabilities that make Claude more useful for technical work. If you've been using Claude for Desktop, nothing breaks. Your installation updates automatically. But the name change signals where Anthropic is taking this product. ## What Changed **The Name:** Claude for Desktop → Claude Code **The Positioning:** From "desktop app with file access" to "extensible development tool with system integration." **The Icon:** New icon emphasizes code brackets instead of generic desktop motifs. **The Features:** Several new capabilities ship with the rebrand: - Improved terminal integration - Better code file handling (syntax highlighting, multi-file projects) - Faster performance for large codebases - Preparation for MCP (Model Context Protocol) support coming later this month ## Why "Code" Instead of "Desktop" The old name - Claude for Desktop - described where it ran, not what it did. The new name - Claude Code - describes the primary use case. Anthropic is positioning this as a developer tool first, general productivity app second. That doesn't mean non-developers can't use it, but the feature roadmap is clearly focused on technical workflows. The timing makes sense. With GitHub Copilot dominating code assistance and Cursor building momentum, Anthropic needs a clear developer story. Claude Code is that story. ## What's Actually Different Beyond the name, several workflow improvements shipped with this update: **Better Project Handling:** Drag an entire repository into Claude Code and it now maintains file structure context. Previously, Claude saw files as independent uploads. **Terminal Integration:** Claude can now suggest terminal commands that you can execute with one click. Previously, you'd copy-paste suggested commands. **Syntax Highlighting:** Code files now display with proper syntax highlighting in the conversation. Easier to spot errors and review suggestions. **Multi-File Edits:** Claude can now suggest changes across multiple files simultaneously. Previously, edits were file-by-file. ## What's Coming: MCP Support The biggest reason for the rebrand is what's coming later this month: Model Context Protocol (MCP) support. MCP lets Claude Code connect to external tools and data sources. Think of it as extensions or plugins for Claude. Examples of what MCP enables: - Connect to your company's internal APIs - Access databases directly from Claude - Integrate with project management tools - Pull data from business intelligence platforms This extensibility is why "Code" makes more sense than "Desktop." It's not just a native app - it's a platform that integrates with your development environment. Anthropic will announce MCP details later this month. The rebrand prepares users for that shift. ## Who Should Care **Developers:** Claude Code is now explicitly positioned as a development tool. If you've been using claude.ai for coding, try Claude Code. The file handling and terminal integration are significantly better. **Operations Teams:** Even if you're not writing code, Claude Code handles technical documentation, configuration files, and scripts better than the web interface. **Business Users:** If your work doesn't involve code or technical files, the web interface is still fine. Claude Code adds complexity you probably don't need. ## Do You Need to Do Anything? No. If you have Claude for Desktop installed, it updates automatically to Claude Code. Your conversations and settings remain unchanged. If you don't have it installed yet, download it from anthropic.com. Still requires Claude Pro ($20/month) or Team plan. ## Quick Takeaway Claude Code is more than a rebrand - it's a repositioning toward developer workflows and extensibility. The immediate improvements (better project handling, terminal integration, syntax highlighting) are nice. The real change comes later this month when MCP launches and Claude Code becomes an extensible platform instead of just a desktop app. If you do technical work with Claude, start using Claude Code now. If you're purely using Claude for business writing and analysis, the web interface is still fine.
